Drone Effectors: Airframe-Agnostic UAS Payloads

Purpose-built explosive effectors for the drones you fly. Not a system you’re locked into.

A drone equipped with an Alford shaped charge takes flight

Alford drone effectors put field-proven shaped charge technology on any UAS.

Modular, scalable and airframe-agnostic by design by design, they arm the platforms your force already operates, and the ones you’ll operate next.

Three Ways to Arm a Drone

Forces arming uncrewed systems today face a choice between two established options and a third:

Buy a complete system. Integrated loitering munitions bundle the warhead with the drone, the launcher and the control station. The effect is fixed, the platform is fixed, and when the airframe is superseded, the capability goes with it.

Improvise. Repurposed warheads and modified ordnance can arm a drone quickly. They cannot be certified easily, their effects are inconsistent, donor munition stocks are finite, and the safety burden falls on the operator.

Fit a purpose-built effector. Alford drone effectors separate the munition from the platform. Charges are customised to your target effect, size and weight requirements, and integrate with any UAV. The airframe can change. The effector programme continues.

Built On Charges Operators Trust

An operator arms an Alford drone effector

Alford has designed shaped charges for more than forty years, for the people who work closest to them: EOD operators, breachers and combat engineers. That work demands two things above all. Precision of effect, and absolute confidence in initiation.

Our modular UAS payloads carry the same engineering onto unmanned platforms. The charge does the work. The aircraft is the delivery method.

Targets vary: armour, structures, materiel, personnel in the open. A single warhead type forces compromise on most of them. A modular system lets you match the effect to the target, mission by mission, without changing platform or procedure.

Built to Outlast the Airframe

Uncrewed platforms now iterate in months, not years. A munition designed around one airframe becomes obsolete on the same schedule.

Alford effectors are designed around the target, not the platform. The same modular charge architecture moves between airframes as your fleet evolves, protecting the investment in qualification, training and stock.

Our established infrastructure supports agile design and production timelines, so effectors can be adapted as requirements change.

One System, Three Decisions

Every Alford drone effector is configured the same way:

Charge

Select the body size and explosive load for the effect you need. Charges are available in a range of diameters and are easily scaled.

Projectile

Fit the projectile that suits the target: EFPJFC, fragmenting, incendiary or dual-purpose.

Initiation

Arm and fire through the Electronic Safe Arming & Firing Unit (ESAFU).

The result is a modular system that integrates with any UAS and adapts as the target set changes.

Safe Arming and Firing, Engineered In

The Electronic Safe Arming & Firing Unit (ESAFU) is what separates a certifiable munition from a field expedient.

The ESAFU incorporates multiple physical and electronic safety mechanisms and accepts a range of firing inputs. The result is an effector that behaves predictably through carriage, arming and initiation, and that an armed force can put through safety assessment with confidence.

Proven Systems, New Platform

Operationally proven Alford charges integrate with UAS in the same way: Magma, Pluton, and Krakatoa. If your unit already holds them, your drone programme already has a payload.

Select Your Effect

Charges are available in a range of sizes and projectile configurations, including EFP, JFC, fragmenting, incendiary and dual-purpose, matched to your target set and your platform’s payload capacity.

Fill Where You Fight

Alford effectors follow the user-filled model proven across our EOD and demolition ranges: charges ship and store without explosive content, simplifying transport, storage and classification, and are filled at the point of use. Factory-filled options are available for high-volume deployment.

The Alford Drone Effector Range

Three systems engineered specifically for drone use:

ModelLengthDiameterNEQAnti-StructureAnti-ArmourFrag
Fujin60mm+65mmMin. 200g
Raijin60mm+79mmMin. 400g
Tengu60mm+97mmMin. 500g

All three accept the full projectile range, with explosive loads adjusted to the desired effect.

Alford Designed, Alford Tested, Alford Produced

Alford effectors are designed, tested and manufactured within our own infrastructure, which keeps design and production timelines short.

Requirements move from conversation to trial quickly, and from trial to delivery without a subcontract chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply complete drone systems?

No, and that’s deliberate. Alford supplies the effector: the charge, projectile, and safe arming-and-firing unit. You choose the airframe. This keeps the munition capability independent of any single platform, avoids system lock-in, and lets you arm the drones your force already operates.

Which drones are Alford effectors compatible with?

The system is drone-agnostic. Charges are sized and mounted to suit your platform, and the ESAFU integrates directly or over MAVLink. That includes airframes you haven’t adopted yet: because the effector isn’t built around one platform, it moves with your fleet as it evolves. Tell us what you fly, and we’ll advise on configuration.

What happens when we change airframes?

The effector programme continues. Because charges are platform-agnostic, moving to a new airframe is an integration exercise, not a re-procurement. Qualification work, operator familiarity and stock all carry over.

Can charges be customised?

Yes. Size, weight, explosive load and projectile type are all adjusted to meet your target effect and platform limits.

Who fills the charges?

Either party. Charges are user-fillable with readily available plastic explosive and standard electric detonators, which means they ship and store without explosive content, simplifying transport and classification. Factory-filled options are available for high-volume deployment.

How is safe arming handled?

Through the Electronic Safe Arming & Firing Unit (ESAFU), which communicates directly with the aircraft or over MAVLink and incorporates multiple physical and electronic safety mechanisms and firing inputs. The result is predictable behaviour through carriage, arming and initiation, and a system an armed force can put through safety assessment.

How are export and end-user requirements handled?

All enquiries are subject to UK export controls and end-user verification. Our team will advise on requirements for your region as part of the initial conversation.
