Threat exploitation training develops the skills needed to understand, locate, and technically exploit explosive threats. It spans Homemade Explosives (HME), Weapons Technical Intelligence (WTI), Sensitive Site Exploitation (SSE) and counter threat search, disciplines that together turn incidents and finds into actionable intelligence and improved force protection.
Alford Training delivers these courses to military, security and law enforcement organisations across NATO and partner nations. Every programme is shaped by a Training Needs Analysis (TNA), so content, duration and entry standards reflect the threats in your region of operation and the capability outcomes you need. Courses align with UK and NATO Standard Operating Procedures and are delivered by operationally experienced instructors.
Homemade Explosives (HME)
Our HME courses develop the ability to recognise the indicators of homemade explosives manufacture and respond safely. Training covers threat awareness, recognition of suspicious materials and environments, understanding of hazards, and safe initial actions, equipping EOD operators, search teams, and frontline responders to protect themselves and the public.
Courses are threat-led and regularly updated to reflect current and emerging HME use in conflict zones and domestic security contexts. Training is delivered only to government, military, and law enforcement customers, subject to end-user verification.
Weapons Technical Intelligence (WTI) and Sensitive Site Exploitation (SSE)

Weapons Technical Intelligence is the collection, exploitation, and analysis of technical information from weapons, devices, and incident scenes to support attribution, force protection, and the targeting of threat networks. Our WTI and SSE courses train operators and analysts to preserve, document and exploit material of intelligence value, from initial scene actions through to reporting that feeds the wider intelligence picture.
Training reflects current NATO approaches to exploitation and is tailored to your organisation’s role in the exploitation chain.
Counter Threat Search
Counter threat search training develops the planning and execution of systematic search operations to locate IEDs, explosive ordnance and other threat items before they cause harm. Courses cover search theory, planning and command, and practical search techniques across realistic environments, from route and area search to venue and building search.
Programmes are suitable for dedicated search teams and for units adding a search capability, with entry standards agreed through the TNA process.

How Our Training Is Delivered
TNA-led design
Every course begins with close engagement to understand your operational context, followed by a comprehensive Training Needs Analysis. Duration, cohort size and entry standards are tailored to your requirements rather than fixed to a standard template.
Practical first
Classroom instruction is minimised in favour of realistic, instructor-led practical exercises in immersive training environments that replicate operational conditions.
Honest assessment
Training is delivered outside the students’ normal chain of command, creating an environment where weaknesses and training deficiencies can be identified and addressed before they become operational risks.
Where we train
Courses are delivered at our UK training facilities, Broadmead Range and Emborough Range, or by deployed training teams at your location.
Your Instructors
Threat exploitation training is delivered by instructors with recent operational experience in high-threat IEDD, exploitation and counter-IED roles across multiple theatres.
