Van Trepan™ IEDD Access Tool
Van Trepan™ is a low-NEQ, water-tamped charge that cuts a 300mm circular hole in the side, door, or roof of a vehicle for cargo inspection or insertion of a disruption charge such as Bottler™. The charge cuts approximately 9/10 of the circle, leaving 1/10 as a hinge: the cut disc swings on the hinge and rips free, projecting to one side, which significantly reduces the risk of it striking and inadvertently initiating a device inside the vehicle. At 11g or 22g NEQ, it achieves vehicle access with minimal collateral effect. Covered in our EOD, IEDD & Maritime EOD training.
Hinge design, not a disc projectile. The 9/10 circular cut leaves a controlled hinge; the freed disc deflects to one side rather than into the vehicle contents, protecting the device from inadvertent initiation
Two-step defeat sequence. Van Trepan cuts the entry hole; Bottler™ or another disruptor passes through to defeat the device without the operator approaching the vehicle
Remote observation port. The 300mm hole accepts cameras and inspection equipment for cargo assessment before any further intervention
11g or 22g NEQ, set by single or double loop of 10g/m detonating cord; very low explosive load for the task
ROV-deployable. Positions via robot arm, prop stick, or magnetic attachment; secures with Breacher's Tape™ or HydroTape™ depending on surface condition

Explosive Load and Performance
Van Trepan™ has an incomplete loop as an explosive channel,
which cuts around 9/10 of a circle, leaving the remaining 1/10 as a hinge. When fired, the metal cut-out disc swings on the hinge and then rips off, significantly slowing down the metal fragment and ensuring it projects to one side. This reduces the risk of the severed disc striking the IED and causing an inadvertent detonation.
The charge case is made from a circular plastic moulding with a circular
groove on the target-contact surface, designed to receive one or two loops of detonating cord with a load of ~10g/metre.
Deployment to Target
Van Trepan™ can be stuck to a target using Alford Technologies’ Breacher’s Tape™ or HydroTape™.
The tape can be used to secure the charge to the surface so that the robot can place the charge and then retreat, leaving the charge in place. Magnets can also be added to the charge if needed.
